Unit: The Lightning Thief

Unit goal:

Students read literary and informational texts to understand traditional stories that focus on common patterns in literature, specifically the quest. Students express their understanding of how literature helps us make sense of the world, and how literature from the past influences our current lives and contemporary stories.

Objectives

  • be able to read a grade level text and understand the concept of a quest and its importance in mythology
  • understand that myths have universal themes and elements and that Greek mythology still influences society today
  • learn about Greek gods and their relationship to one another
  • Read, discuss, and write about texts.
  • Write a response that analyzes events that happened during Percy's quest in The Lightning Thief. Use understanding of Mythological creatures and gods, and share importance of how this knowledge helped Percy and his friends be successful.
    • Don't miss Live Sessions so that you can successfully meet these objectives.

By the end of the Unit...

Students will write a multiparagraph essay in response to the question:

A quest is a search for something and is a commonly used motif in literature around the world. Explain how the quest motif is part of The Lightning Thief. Describe Percy’s goal, the challenges he faces, and how he changes along the way.
Student will write a multiparagraph essay that demonstrates an understanding of the text and uses proper grammar, conventions,s pelling, and grade-appropriate words and phrases. Include examples of how Percy and his friends use their knowledge of mythological gods and their actions to help them on their quest.
